America 250 Groton T-Shirts: Fort Griswold and Submarine
The Battle of Groton Heights (1781)On September 6, 1781, British forces launched a coordinated attack on Groton and New London, targeting Connecticut’s critical coastal defenses and supply routes. At the heart of the fighting stood Fort Griswold, where local militia and Continental soldiers made a determined stand against a superior force.
Despite being outnumbered, the defenders of Fort Griswold fought fiercely. After the fort fell, many American soldiers were killed—even after resistance had ended—making the battle one of the war’s most tragic episodes.
The loss was devastating for Groton, but the stand at Fort Griswold became a symbol of unyielding resistance and sacrifice.
