America 250 Westbrook T-Shirt—Honoring a Local Hero for America 250

Located on Connecticut’s picturesque shoreline, Westbrook, much like many historic New England towns, boasts a rich heritage that predates the nation’s founding. For America 250, Westbrook isn’t just looking back; it’s actively bringing history to life through initiatives that highlight local heroes and the profound sacrifices made for independence.

Dr. John Ely: A Patriot Physician’s Unsung Sacrifice

Imagine a man who not only fought on the battlefield but also bravely faced disease and deprivation to save his fellow countrymen. That was Dr. John Ely (1737–1800), a Westbrook resident whose dedication to the American cause went above and beyond the call of duty.

A physician, surgeon, and military leader, Dr. Ely raised and equipped a regiment at his own expense, serving as both captain and colonel during the Revolutionary War. But his most compelling act of heroism came when he was captured and held as a prisoner of war on Long Island.

He understood that his medical expertise was desperately needed, and he refused to abandon his comrades, even if it meant prolonging his own captivity and risking his health. This selfless act cost him dearly, not only in personal freedom but also financially.
